DEMOCRACY, GOVERNANCE AND CORRUPTION
Guebuza is the only presidential candidate registered in the CNE
Armando Guebuza is the only person who has sent his registration for candidacy in the
presidential elections to the Constitutional Court. The other candidates say that are still collections the required documents for registration, but that they are still within the registration period, which ends of the 30th July.

Renamo formally registers in the CNE
Renamo yesterday formally registered at the National Electoral Commission (CNE) for the elections of 28th October. .
Renamo became the third party to be registered with the CNE, after the Ecologist Party (PECV) and the Group of Electoral Citizens of Nacala (UCINA).

Mozambican Report of APRM meets consensus in the African Union
The Mozambican report on the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), presented on
Tuesday in the African Union (AU) was met with a positive response due to the similarities between this self-evaluation by the Mozambican Government and the evaluation of the MARP Mission to Mozambique.
The Mozambican report was presented by the Minister of Planning and Development,
Aiuba Cuereneia, in his quality of focal point for the coordenation of the APRM
implementation process..

Nampula, Sofala and Zambezia will lose 10 Members of Parliament
The provinces of Nampula, Sofala and Zambezia will lose 10 seats in the next Parliament if there are radical changes in the number of registered voters. According to the provisional list of mandate for the next Parliament, Nampula will lose 4 seats (from 50 to 46 Members), while Sofala and Zambezia will each lose 3 seats (from 48 to 45 and 22 to 19 seats, respectively).

Sweden reaffirms support to Mozambique

According to the Swedish Ambassador to Mozambique, Torvald Akesson, talking yesterday
about the Swedish presidency of European Union, his country will continue to support
Mozambique. However, the level of support will depend on the effects of the world financial crisis in Europe, and in Sweden in particular. Mozambique and Sweden signed yesterday an agreement for four years of Swedish support to the Mozambican State Budget, by which Sweden will make available 1,440 million krona.

IMF makes credit available to Mozambique
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved yesterday in Washington, US$176m of
credit to minimize the negative effects of the world financial crisis in the Mozambican economy. The money was made available through the Exogenous Shocks Facility of the IMF after a request made by the Mozambican authorities..

Districts of Cabo Delgado have food security
Some districts of Cabo Delgado have food security guaranteed until the next harvest, due to the achievement of good results in the current agricultural campaign. One of the districts is Balama which, despite water scarcity and destruction of crops by wildlife has achieved high yields.

People abandon AIDS treatment in Nampula
From 2007 to the present approximately 1500 people abandoned AIDS treatment in
Nampula, according to the statistics of the Provincial Department of Health. Over the
period, of 58,785 people tested, more than 17,000 tested positive.

Cholera continues to kill in Cabo Delgado

The cholera situation is still of concern in Macomia and Muidumbe, Cabo Delgado
province. Official data from the Provincial Department of Health indicates that since
January 44 people have died of the disease. The Government is paying attention to the
issue, disseminating messages on hygiene habits for the avoidance of the disease.

Office of Attorney-General investigates Police in Tete

The Office of the Attorney-General in Tete is investigating the Police there, including the
Provincial Commander, about the misdirection of 178,660 Meticais. The case was opened
after an anonymous policeman accused his colleagues.

5,377 bodies buried in mass graves in the last 3.5 years

According to data of the Department of Health and Cemeteries of the Municipality of
Maputo, 5,377 bodies were buried in mass graves since 2007. The Administrator of the
Cemetery of Lhanguene, Alexandre Libombo, is surprised by the situation becasue the
cost of a space for an individual grave is only 75 Meticais. He believes however that
people are buried in mass graves because it is not possible to afford coffins.
