Mayor of London Boris Johnson has condemned last night's violence in north London and sought to reassure Londoners, especially those in and around Tottenham, that City Hall and the police are doing everything in their power to resolve and calm the situation.
Mr Johnson said: “I’m appalled at the scenes of violence and destruction in Tottenham. The Acting Commissioner has assured me that the police are doing everything they can to resolve this situation.
“The events leading to these disturbances are rightly being investigated by the IPCC. Harming people and property will do nothing to facilitate the investigation, it will only make the situation worse."
The clashes have left 26 police officers injured, including 8 needing hospital treatment.
London's deputy mayor Kit Malthouse told the BBC and Sky News this morning: "There is no excuse for the kind of behaviour we saw last night. It's absolutely outrageous to see it on the streets of London.
"We'll do as much as we can to ensure there's no recurrence tonight."
Speaking about the investigation over the shooting of Mark Duggan, which sparked the riots, Mr Malthouse said: "I can understand people's unrest. But these investigations take some time."
