Human Rights Felowships

Conectas Human Rights, Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA), Open Society Initiative for Western Africa (OSIWA) and Open Society Justice Initiative (the Justice Initiative) are pleased to invite applications for the Human Rights Fellowship Program for Lusophone Africa – Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique for the year 2010-2011.

The Human Rights Fellowship Program for Lusophone Africa - Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique is an initiative of Conectas Human Rights in partnership with the Open Society Justice Initiative, the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and the Open Society Initiative for Western Africa. The objective of the program is to strengthen civil society of Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa through the development of both academic and practical experience of human rights activists. From 2004 to 2009, the program brought to Brazil 30 activists from Angola, Mozambique, East Timor and Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.





2010 Human Rights Fellowship Program for Lusophone Africa





The Fellowship Program is 18 months in duration and involves both academic study and practical experience in human rights and public interest advocacy. For the first six months of the Program, fellows complete a four-month non-degree course of study at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo as well as a four-month internship in a Brazilian non-governmental organization that deals with the topic they work in their home country. After that, once back in Africa, they implement during one year a human rights project in their nominating NGO.



Human rights activists and lawyers from Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde will be selected to participate in the 2010 Fellowship Program. Portuguese fluency required.
