LETTER FROM DAVID CAMERON ON TODAY'S ELECTIONS

Dear MANUEL,

Today is the day you can have your say in the European and, in many areas, local elections. As you can see from this video, Samantha and I have already voted this morning - no prizes for guessing who I, and hopefully my wife, voted for! I am proud of the campaign we have fought for these elections.

In the European elections, we are the only party sticking by our promise to hold a referendum on the European constitution. In the local elections, we recognise that in this recession what people need most is government that costs less and delivers more - that is what Conservative councils are proven to deliver (and if you get a Conservative Government, all councils will be able to freeze your council tax for two years).

But, above all, I think we've been winning the big argument about what our country now needs. What we desperately need now - as shown by the resignations of three government ministers on the eve of these elections - is a General Election.

We don't just need a General Election because we need a government that will give us a fresh start and provide strong leadership in this recession - although, of course, that is vital. We also need a General Election because of the scandal over MPs' expenses. As a party leader, I can take action on MPs in our party - and I have - but that's not enough. The British public wants to be able to pass judgment on all MPs, and the only way that can be done is by holding a General Election.

Today we have a chance to stand up for our country and the sort of government we need right now. So please make sure you get out to your polling station and vote for change - it could be the most important thing you do today. Forward this email to your friends and colleagues to remind them to vote. Knock on doors. Let's do whatever we can to send a message to Gordon Brown that enough is enough.

David Cameron
