Constitutional Council rejects Electoral Union case
The Constitutional Council has rejected the case submitted to it by the
Electoral Union, one of the blocks of the Renamo-Electoral Union
coalition. The block asked the Constitutional Council to find against
the decision of Renamo to replace Maria Moreno and Luis Trinta as the
leader and Vice-Leader of the Renamo-Electoral Union in Parliament. The
Electoral Union alleges that the decision was taken unilaterally by
Renamo and that as such it violated the statutes of the coalition.
Amongst other reasons given, the Constitutional Council argued that the
Electoral Union had not submitted enough proofs of the alegations.

ALIMO feels indignant towards RENAMO
The leader of the Independent Alliance of Mozambique (ALIMO), Khalid
Sidat, yesterday stated his indignation at the silence of Renamo in
relation to the future of the coalition in the Parliament.

Guebuza tells Chibuto population not to despair about mining project
President Armando Guebuza has advised the people of Chibuto,Gaza
province, to maintain their hopes in relation to the paralization of the
mining sector in the district. He was reacting to worries expressed by
members of the local population during a meeting which took place
within the scope of 'open presidency' .

Peace-keeping mission training centre in Mozambique
According to the Minister of Defense, Filipe Nyussi, Mozambique will
soon open a Centre of Excellency for the Training and Support of
Peace-Keeping Operations. The Center aims to prepare troops for
peace-keeping operations in the SADC region and in the Community of
Portuguese-Speaking Countires (CPLP).

Exports from Portugal to Mozambique increase
The volume of exports from Portugal to Mozambique increased by 33% in
2008. During the same year Portugal became the third largest investor in
the country. Manwhile, in the first three months of this year Portugal
invested in various development projects to the value of around
US$16.5m, and as such became the second largest investor over the
period.

Free distribution of food ends in Inhambane
According to the Governor of Inhambane, Itai Meque, the free
distribution of food has ended, due to the improved results of this
year's agricultural campaign.

Gas production brings US$39.5m to the State
The exploitation of gas in Temane and Pande, in Inhambane province has
brought the State US$39.5m in tax income.

Balate condemned to 22 years in prison
The former chief of the Police, Alexandre Balate, has been condemned to
22 years in prison for killing the citizen Abranches Afonso Penicelo.
He must also pay a fine of 500,000 Meticais to the family of the victim.

Criminality reduces in Niassa
According to the Commander of the Police in Niassa, Joao Mahunguele, the
index of criminality has decreased in the province, from 1330 cases in
2004 to 451 in 2008. However, the number of road deaths has increased,
from 38 deaths in 2004 to 48 deaths in 2008.

Mozambican adolescent without genital organs
Mozambican authorities are working to bring to justice the Malawian
businessman Patrick Murama, accused of removing the genital organs of a
Mozambican adolescent in Mulange, Malawi.
