DEMOCRACY, GOVERNANCE AND CORRUPTION

Daviz Simango is presidential candidate of MDM
The selection of Daviz Simango as the presidential candidate of MDM was
confirmed at the Party’s National Council which took place last weekend
in Nampula Province. It is not yet clear who will be the
Secretary-General, but the likely candidates are Maria Moreno and Ismael
Mussá, both of whom recently left Renamo.

Ministry of Education meets in Gaza
The Ministry of Education and Culture (MINEC) will, starting from today,
meet in Bilene in Gaza province. The meeting will debate, amongst other
subjects, the current pedagogical situation and the improvement of
teaching. The meeting is chaired by the Minister of Education and
Culture, Aires Aly.

Parliament interrupts its work for the Renamo congress
The President of the Assembly of the Republic announced on Thursday that
the Parliament will interrupt its plenary sessions this week at the
request of Renamo deputies. However, Renamo is still unclear as to the
exact date of the congress. The spokesperson of Party, Fernando Mazanga,
has not said that the congress would take place during this week, only
promising that when the date is confirmed a press conference would be
called to announce it.

First signs of pollution of Chicamba
The Chicamba Lake, the largest artificial lake and the main fishing
center of Manica province, is showing the first signs of pollution of
its waters as a consequence of intense illegal gold mining activity
being developed upstream.

German companies look for business opportunities
A German enterprise mission in the areas of construction, health,
digital security systems, mines, hydraulic engineering, banking,
transport and renewable energy arrives in the country today for a two
day visit, whose objective is to look for business opportunities and
partnerships with domestic companies. During their stay in Maputo, the
group of business people will participate in bilateral meeting where
they will find out about the business environment, infrastructure
development, natural resources and the benefits of investing in
Mozambique.

Disruptions in the fibre optic network
A problem with the fibre optic network of Telecomunicaçoes de
Moçambique, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Tofo,
Inhambane province, yesterday disrupted fixed and mobile communications,
as well as internet connections in the Central and Northern regions of
the country. A company source confirmed at the end of the day,
yesterday, that technicians had re-established services.

BCM case: decision of Supreme Court is invalid – says Maximo Dias
The decision of the Supreme Court which condemns the defendants to
prison sentences is invalid, according to Maximo Dias, a renowned lawyer
who is also a Member of Parliament for Renamo – UE. He says that this is
because at the time of the decision´s signature, the three judges who
signed it, Luís António Mondlane, João Carlos Trindade and José Norberto
Carrilho, had left their posts in the Supreme Court.
