1. DEMOCRACY, GOVERNANCE AND CORRUPTION

1.1. Minister of Health reacts in the American doctors case

Minister of Health, Ivo Garrido, yesterday spoke about the case of the American doctors. He stated that no negotiation has taken place regarding them. The contracting of 11 managers of health programs has been agreed by the Ministry of Health and the US Embassy. 1.2. Ismael Mussa and Maria Moreno abandon Renamo

Members of the Parliament Maria Moreno and Ismael Mussa have left the Renamo party. The letter of their resignation was received yesterday by the leader of Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama. Maria Moreno said that she is desillusioned with Dhlakama and with the course of the party is taking. Mussa expressed sympathy for the MDM Party but said that at the moment he will be an independent Member of Parliament. Moreno said that she may or may not join another party. 1.3. “Renamo will only end on the day that the people disappear”

The Leader of Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama, said yesterday in the district of Mossuri, in Nampula that contrary to the pronnoucements of Frelimo, his Party will never disappear. He said that “ Renamo will only end on the day that the people disappear”. He went on to say that Renamo is the “only party that represents the interests of the people”, and that “we are a strong party and not a party of villains. We are a democratic party and I am a son of the people”. 1.4. MDM postpones National Council to avoid clash with Renamo

The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), has changed the date of its National Council from the 29th of May to the 6th June to avoid a clash with Renamo. Both Parties will hold their meetings in Nampula, and the dates of Renamo’s meeting – 1st to 3rd of June – are very close to the date previously planned by MDM. 2. ECONOMICS AND DEVELOPMENT

2.1. Partners give US$804m of support to Mozambique

The group of the Partners of Programmatic Support to the State (G19), yesterday promised to make available US$804.5m in support to activities planned by the Mozambican executive for the year 2010. of this amount, 471.8 million Dollars is destined as direct budget support, and the remaining 332.7 million Dollars for common funds and sectoral programs.

2.2. President of Republic and businesses debate development of Maputo

The Maputo Municipal Government, in partnership with the Federation of Mozambican Economic Associations (CTA) will today organize an economic seminar which will bring together the President, businesses and representatives of civil society. The participants will debate subjects related to the economic life of the city of Maputo, to identify the course towards its healthy development. WHO offers Tamiflu to combat flu virus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has given the Mozambican Government 31 000 doses of Tamiflu to combat the Flu A virus (H1N1), which have been distributed to the provinces. Tamiflu is a treatment produced to prevent Bird Flu, but has now been verified as being effective against Flu A. 3. HUMAN RIGHTS, JUSTICE AND LEGAL AFFAIRS

3.1. “Justice must be close to citizen” – says President

At their swearing-in yesterday, the President of the Republic, Armando Guebuza, challenged the new presidents of the Supreme Court, Ozias Pondja, Administrative Court, Machatine Munguambe, and Constitutional Council, Luis Mondlane to dedicate their efforts to the process of the construction of a democratic state based on the rule of law, with foundation in the consolidation of the principle of separation and independence of powers. He also said that decentralization of the institutions of Justice is a priority.
