Former British prime minister Baroness Thatcher, 82, has been taken to St Thomas’ Hospital in London for precautionary tests, the Conservative party said on Friday night. Lady Thatcher, UK premier for 11 years till she was ousted in 1990, suffered a series of strokes some years ago after which she was advised by doctors to pull out of making public speeches.
A spokeswoman for the Conservative Party, which Lady Thatcher led for 15 years, said Lady Thatcher had been taken ill earlier on Friday. ”We’ve been in touch with her office and sent her our best wishes,” the spokeswoman said. A spokeswoman for St Thomas’ Hospital said Baroness Thatcher was in a “stable” condition. The spokeswoman said in a statement: “We can confirm that Baroness Thatcher has been admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital and is expected to remain in hospital overnight for observation.” As Britain’s first and so far only female prime minister, Lady Thatcher was dubbed the Iron Lady, earning a reputation as one of the most formidable but controversial politicians of her era and winning three general elections. Earlier this month she urged Conservatives to “hold firm to their beliefs” as she was honoured with a statue at the party’s HQ.
