N’gauma case: Nyussi wants clarifications

The Minister of National Defence, Filipe Nyussi, yesterday asked the Malawian Authorities, for clarification on the 3rd of August Ngauma incidents, in Niassa Province. Meanwhile, the Malawian Authorities, through their Minister of Defence, Sidik Mia, allege that it is not the correct time to clarify the incidents. According to him, the creation of a joint commission of the two countries to conclude work in the terrain is needed. These statements were made yesterday during the 4th Session of the Permanent Joint Commission of the Defense and Security held in Maputo city.

Territorial Statistics: Local Governments stronger

The implementation of territorial statistics will lead to better planning and management of rare resources by the local Governments. This conclusion was found during the provincial seminar about this issue, held over two days in Beira city, Sofala province. The meeting joined permanent secretaries and heads of departments of the public sector working in Sofala province.

Queen of Swaziland is interested in humanitarian projects
The First Queen of Swaziland, Ntombi Tfwala has been visiting Mozambique since yesterday and will stay for three days. She was invited by the Mozambican First Lady, Maria da Luz Guebuza. The Queen and the First Lady will share experiences related to the development of humanitarian and social projects which benefit poor communities.

Political parties do not yet have State funds for electoral campaigns

Ten days from the beginning of the electoral campaigns, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) have still not published the list of eligible political parties and consequently, the State funds were not made available. By doing this, CNE is violating the electoral calendar which the commission itself approved.

USAID (The Agency for International Development) is investing close to US$60m in programs for food security and nutrition, covering the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Zambezia.

Financial crisis: old CIFEL factory closes again

A steel production factory, previously the Company of Mozambican Steel Makers (CIFEL), opened in April of 2008 by the transnational company ArcelorMittal has closed its doors due to the international financial crisis, leaving 90 workers unemployed. This information was revealed in Maputo by the National Director of the Industry, Sidónio dos Santos, who highlighted that the lowering of prices for iron used in construction and the international steel market were responsible for the factory's closure.

Commercialisation of 95 thousand tonnes of cashew nuts is predicted

It is estimated that Mozambique will produce 95 thousand tonnes of cashew nuts, from the second half of October. The predictions from the National Institute of Cashew indicate an increase in production of more than 30 thousand tonnes. This year's production exceeded the national average over the last few years that was approximately 80 thousand tonnes.

Potential Energy attracts Italian companies

A joint work team of Mozambican and Italian intellectuals will be created soon to work out a detailed programme of cooperation and to establish a timetable of activities for the regular control of the implementation of a cooperation project in the energy sector. Italy is interested in implementing diverse projects of renewable energy production in Mozambique, with relevance to bio-diesel, solar systems, wind and hydro power.

Security guards denounce poor work environment
Security guards in Mozambique presented many concerns about their work environment on Monday, to the Minister of Labour. Among the workers concerns were; a lack of dialogue, non-compliance of work agreements, the deviation from labour laws by employers, low salaries and difficult working hours.

Gorongoza National Park: conflict between humans and wildlife gets worse
A fight for space and ecosystems is taking place between humans and wildlife in the Gorongoza National Park. The problem has increased in the last days with the reports of deaths and the destruction of farms, houses and farmers' properties caused by elephants.

Food insecurity levels reduced
The food and nutritional insecurity levels in the Mozambican population reduced from 800,000 people in 2005 to 450,000 in 2008. Projections by the Technical Secretariat of Food and Nutritional Security (SETSAN) indicate that the number of vulnerable people this year will be around 247,000.
