Frelimo in Beira has new First Secretary
Frelimo elected Lino Massunguine as its First Secretary in Beira, Sofala
province, last week. He is a veteran of the national liberation struggle
and works at the Department of Finance of Sofala province. Massunguine
replaces Jó Capece who resigned in April, allegedly for 'professional
reasons'.

Maputo is expanding – says President Guebuza
According to President Armando Guebuza, the city of Maputo is expanding
and it can develop still further. Guebuza was speaking at a press
conference yesterday, at the end of his visit of four days to Maputo
city, which took place within the scope of 'open presidency'.

Guebuza visits Maputo province
President Armando Guebuza will start a four-day visit to Maputo province
today, within the scope of 'open presidency'. Guebuza will visit the
districts of Magude, Marracuene, Namaacha and Boane, will meet with the
provincial and district Governments and local people, and visit
locations of economic, social and cultural interest.

President Guebuza congratulates Children
President Armando Guebuza renewed yesterday the Government’s promise to
continue fighting to improve the lives of children and assure that
children are better prepared to participate in the development of the
country. Guebuza made his statements in the scope of the International
Day of the Child, celebrated today, 1st June.

Municipality of Maputo needs $376M for next 5 years
The Municipality of Maputo (CMCM) needs US$376m for the realisation of
activities planned for the next five years. The information was given
last Friday in Catembe by David Simango, during the presentation of his
report on the first 100 days of his Municipal Government to the
President of the Republic.

Explosions in Maringue: Renamo accuses Frelimo of manipulating
information
A false alarm was given last Wednesday of large explosions in the Renamo
millitary base of Maringue, in Sofala province, between 2.40am and 5pm.
The Renamo Delegate in Maringue said that the information was not true,
and accused Frelimo of divulging it with the objective of damaging the
image of his Party.

The statue of Andre Matsangaissa will be removed
The Municipal Assembly of Beira decided yesterday to remove the statue
of Andre Matsangaissa and also to remove Matsangaissa’s name from
roundabaout number 2314 in Munhava, in Beira city. The decision
represents a coup for Daviz Simango, who did not miss the opportunity to
call attention to the political posturing involved in the naming of the
roundabout after the first guerilla leader of Renamo.

Work on Sena Line is in final phase
The works on the reconstruction of the Sena line have reached Mapangali
railway station, in Mutarara district, Tete province. The works will end
on 30th September, after the remaining 180kms have been completed. The
line will have a total length of 670 km, running from Beira to Moatize.

UNICEF distributes mosquito nets in 92 districts
UNICEF will donate mosquito nets to children in 92 districts that were
not included in the home-spraying programme. The aim is to protect
children under five years of age from Malaria.

Preliminary studies of the viability of the Mpanda Nkuwa dam will be
finished by August
The results of the preliminary environmental study for the construction
of the Mpanda Nkuwa dam, in Tete province will be delivered to the
Government by August. They will indicate the existence or not of
barriers fatal to the implementation of the project, and present
recommendations on aspects to be considered in the next phase, which
will comprise environmental impact and engineering assessments.

Construction of Nacala Porto Hospital will finish next month
The works on the construction of the new building of Nacala Porto
Hospital, in Nampula province, will end in July. The costs were
estimated at US$7m. The hospital will have all of the basic health
services demanded of an institution of that level.

Coordination against human trafficking
According to the Executive Secretary of SADC, statistics suggest that,
after Asia, the African region has the second highest number of
trafficked people globally. He said that in the SADC region the first
step taken was the recognition that countries must work together to
improve coordination and information sharing to solve the problem.

'Police does not protect informants'
People of Chimoio city, Manica province, accused the Police of not
protecting citizens who denounce cases of crime. They also said that
police officers inform criminals as to who has denounced them, putting
the lives of the informants at risk. The Head of the Police has denied
the accusations.
