Daviz Simango assaulted in Nacala-Porto
The President of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) and presidential Candidate, Daviz Simango, was assaulted yesterday in Nacala-Porto, Nampula province. The assault occurred when he was preparing for a rally, in the scope of preparations for the elections of 28th October. The suspected orchestractors were identified as members of the personal guard of the leader of Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama, and were
using one of his cars. These people assaulted three members of the Police and took the only firearm they had.
Simango is under the protection of the Police in the city of Nampula. Dhlakama is currently staying in the same city.

The Frelimo Party began on Monday the first phase of the internal election of candidates for the Assembly of the Republic and Provincial Assemblies for the elections of 28th October.

Mozambique is a good example of decentralization in Africa
The Adviser to the Governance and Institutional Development Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Janet Kathyola, has said that Mozambique is a good example of decentralization in Africa, having channeled financial resources to rural zones. She made these comments while speaking at the first National Conference on Public Function, last Saturday, in Maputo.

Regional flights to Tete
From 2010, Tete Airport will receive regional flights, after the completion of rehabilitation work which will commence shortly.

Electricity will reach 90,000 new consumers per year According to the Ministry of Energy, Salvador Namburete, speaking yesterday in Maputo, at least 90,000 new consumers will be connected to the national electricity network each year until 2011This will mean that 3.5 million people – 17% of the population - will have access to electricity.

Budget of Moatize mining project reduced by US$125m in 2009
The multinational company Vale has revised down its budget for 2009, from US$444m to US$319m. This is due to exchange rate fluctuations, revision of the cost of equipment, and implementation of the project.

Capital of the country could be flooded
The city of Maputo is at risk of being flooded by the sea in the next few years. This is because, although the majority of the city is on higher land, the Port of Maputo has railway and fuel access connections very near to river estuaries in the bay, and this could allow the entrance of water into the city.

Nini Satar asks for annulment of the “BCM case” decision Nini Satar, condemned to prison in the “BCM case” has written two documents to the Supreme Court, in one of which he states his intention to appeal the verdict against him again and in the other of which he asks for the verdict to be annulled, given that the Judges who produced the decision were not legally allowed to do so because they had already
left their positions.
