Tenth Parliamentary Session will be extended
The Permanent Commission of the Parliament has decided to extend the
10th Parliament Session for an undefined period. The extension aims to
avoid the need for an extraordinary session before the presidential,
legislative and provincial elections. According to the Commission's
spokesperson, Mateus Katupha, an extraordinary session would cost the
State over 23 million Meticais.

STAE trains electoral organs
From today until next Monday the Technical Secretariat of Electoral
Administration (STAE) will hold the third and last phase of the training
of the electoral organisations. The training course aims to prepare the
organisations for the elections to be held this year, andwill involve 26
participants from Maputo (City and Province) and Gaza.

New CNE member hopes for good collaboration
Latino Ligonha, the new member of the National Electoral Commission
(CNE) said that he hopes for good collaboration from his colleagues. He
also said that the only aim of the CNE is to serve the Mozambican
people.
Latinho Ligonha was sworn-in yesterday by President Armando Guebuza. The
CNE now has its full quota of 13 members. Five of these members are
elected by the Parliament and the remaining eight by civil society
organizations.

MDM members return to Renamo
A total of 10 members who had abandoned Renamo to join the Mozambican
Democratic Movement (MDM) in Nampula, have returned to their former
political party led by Afonso Dhlakama. The members alleged that they
did not find a good environment in the MDM.

Public expenditure rationalized in response to the global economic
crisis
The Government has approved measures to rationalize public expenditure
for this year, in response to the world economic crisis.
Expenditure on national and international travel, daily allowance, fuel,
oil and communication costs for State officials will be reduced.

President advises society to support CNE
President Armando Guebuza yesterday advised all political movements and
people in general to support the National Electoral Commission (CNE) in
preparing for the presidential, legislative and provincial elections
this year.

Shark fishery results in loses of millions of dollars for the State
The country is losing millions of dollars because of illegal shark
fishery by foreign fishermen in Nampula province who catch sharks for
their fins.

New boats for “Transmaritima”
According to the company “Transmaritima” six new boats imported last
December will strengthen connections between Maputo, Inhambane, Beira
and Quelimane. The boats will enter into service in the next few days,
after some internal alterations have been completed.

CFM will build a new deepwater port
According to Rui Fonseca, CEO of the company Mozambique Ports and
Railways (CFM), the company will build a new deepwater port to process
at least 50 million tons of cargo per year, in Matutuine district,
Maputo province.

ANADARKO believes that it will find oil in Rovuma basin
Experts of ANADARKO, the North American multinational, continue to be
very optimistic that they will find oil in Rovuma Basin. According to
them, their experience makes them believe that they can only be sure of
its existence or not through continued exploration.

Police celebrates its 34th Birthday
With the slogan “For the law and order – stop crime; help police to
combat crime” the Police of the Republic of Mozambique will celebrate
its 34th birthday on 17th May. To mark the occasion the police has
organized many cultural activities in the each of the 11 provinces.
Jose Mandra, Vice-Minister of the Interior, chief of the police command
and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, will meet
tomorrow with the students of the Manyanga Secondary School and Josina
Machel Secondary School within the scope of police-community relations.

Accident hurts 12 people in Chomoio city
A car accident of has left 12 people, including a woman and child, with
serious injuries. The accident occured in Chimoio, Manica province, when
a minibus crashed into a house. The victims were taken to the central
hospital. The vehicle is thought to have been travelling too quickly.

Former Chief of PIC is in being judged
The court case of Alexandre Balate, former chief of the Police Criminal
Investigation (PIC) organisation, began on Monday 11th May. Balate is
accused of killing in cold blood the citizen Abranches Penicelo. After
being shot, Abranches has had enough time to denounce the police
atrocities.
The killing took place in Manhiça district, Maputo province. Abranches
was a resident of Belo Horizonte, Boane district.

Government disbands PIC and creates SICRIM
The Government has disbanded the Police Criminal Investigation
organisation (PIC) and created the Service of Criminal Investigation
(SICRIM).

Three Mozambicans involved in the HCB case
Three Mozambicans people are suspected of being involved with the acts
of the foreign citizens who introduced substances suspected to be
corrosive in the Cahora bassa dam. The Mozambicans have been detained in
Tete prison.
