Parliament debates Consumers’ Law

The proposal for the Consumers’ Law is currently before parliament. It will be debated during the next days. The law as currently proposed will promote the rights of consumers. (O País. 14th April, 2009)



The President will declare the date of elections this week

According to the electoral law, the President Armando Guebuza must declare the date of the next elections on either Tuesday or Wednesday this week. (O País. 14th April, 2009)



Frelimo prepares for national staff conference

Frelimo is preparing for its national staff conference, to be held from 17th April and 19th April. The meeting will focus on preparations for the next presidential, legislative and provincial elections. (O País. 14th April, 2009)



The Government of Gaza delivers cars to districts

The government of Gaza recently delivered three cars to its three constituent districts. The cars were bought using provincial government funds. The cars will be used in the education and culture, youth and technology sectors. (O País. 14th April, 2009)



The Ministry of State Administration (MAE) trains heads of municipalities

MAE will deliver a training course for the 43 heads of municipalities next month. The training course aims to provide them with technical and legal knowledge in order to enable them to better carry out their functions. (Notícias. 14th April, 2009)



The Ministry of Education and Culture trains higher education professionals

The Directors of the pedagogic and academic faculties of many higher education institutions in Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces were recently trained at a workshop in Nampula. Health Centre uses out-of-date medicines

During a visit to Zambezia province the Ministry of Heath, Ivo Garrido, revealed that Chinde’s Health Centre has been using out-of-date medicines to treat patients. Due to the risk to public health he has demanded better control of medicines by the hospital management. (O País. 14th April, 2009)



Police confiscate 67 Driving Licences in a week

Police in Maputo last week confiscated 67 Driving Licences. Meanwhile, a police spokesman stated that 24 road accidents were recorded. These were caused by bad driving and non-maintenance of cars. (O País. 14th April, 2009)

Prospectors suffer violence in Manica

Prospectors in Moadze, in the Macossa district of Manica province, are complaining of beatings and rape perpetrated by supposed customers. According to the head of the Nguawala Administration, the customers allege that the prospectors have cheated them when measuring quantities of minerals. (O País. 14th April, 2009)

DEVELOPMENT AND CORRUPTION

Cahora Bassa provides 100 MW of electricity to EDM

Cahora Bassa is providing Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) with 100 MW of electricity. This means that EDM is now managing 400 MW of electricity, as opposed to 300 MW previously. (O País. 14th April, 2009)



Tsangano to harvest 10 000 tons of wheat

Tsangano district will harvest around 10 000 tons of wheat this year. According to Constantino Alexandre, Provincial head of Agricultural Services, the government provided 500 tons of improved seed for this campaign. (Notícias, 14th April, 2009)



Quirimbas Park acts towards sustainable fishing



Quirimbas Park authorities have decided to establish and regulate institutional relations with the fishing sector, with the objective of the participative and sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems within the delineated zone. (Jornal Noticias, 14 de Abril de 2009)

Government supports agricultural commercialization

The government and its partners will make funds available for the commercialization of cereals. The government aims to encourage the creation of agricultural surplus and to guarantee food security.(Notícias. 14th April, 2009)
