Rethinking the United States' International Role

This project will draw on both our in-house and international network of experts to offer outside perspectives on the United States' future capacity and potential to influence the world beyond its borders.

It will assess the current state of US policy, consider the most promising areas for future US influence, and make specific recommendations on how US engagement could have the most beneficial potential impact on a broad range of countries, regions and thematic policy areas from climate change and energy security to the reform of international institutions.

The work will culminate in a Chatham House Report in early 2009, following the new President's inauguration, and an edited book in the Chatham House Papers series later in the year. The book will explore the regional and thematic issues in depth, while the report will highlight the key findings and recurring themes of the project as well as its conclusions and policy recommendations.

The project is led by Dr Robin Niblett, Director, Chatham House.
