New President Enters White House
As America marked the inauguration of its 44th president celebrations were also under way across the Atlantic. A crowd at the Hard Rock Cafe in Mayfair, London, cheered as Barack Obama delivered his first address.
One partygoer said: "This was an amazing speech and it gives hope to African-Americans for a new beginning, real equality and true opportunity."
Black British sprinter Dwain Chambers, who watched the inauguration at the Chicago Rib Shack in Knightsbridge, London, said: "I found the speech very inspirational. I hope he will keep his word and America will change.
"It doesn't matter that he's black - the fact America wanted change should have an impact on all colours, creeds and classes. It shows that whatever you aspire to, you can achieve."
At the InterContinental Hotel in Park Lane, guests in black ties and ballgowns were sipping champagne at the more formal Yes We Can inauguration party.
