Cardoso killer
rearrested again

Anibalzinho (Anibal dos Santos Junior ), the man convicted of leading the death squad that murdered investigative journalist Carlos Cardoso in November 2000, was arrested this evening (Monday) on the road to Namaacha.

He had escaped from jail in Maputo on Sunday morning. He also escaped from the high security prison in 2002 and 2004. All escapes were seen as organised by people in the police and/or Ministry of Interior.

Escaping with Anibalzinho were two men who murdered police and a prison director. They were being held together in special cells, and AIM points out that although media attention has focused on Anibalzinho, it may well be that those who facilitated the escape were more interested in the other two.

One is an accomplice of the country’s supposedly most wanted criminal and will know the connections between his gang and members of the police who have allowed him to live freely and with impunity.

Revelations by these two men in open court might provide information on police and Ministry of Interior links to organised crime, and on an almost open war between them and those police trying to fight crime, which has led to a number of police being shot and killed. Such revalations could prove highly inconvenient for some police officers and very senior Ministry of Interior officials, who would be happy to see those trials avoided. Former Interior Minister Almerinho Manhenje has been in detention since 22 September.
