Greetings form the Forum!
The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons held its fifth General Assembly in Arusha , Tanzania on the 25-26 of October. Parliamentarians from Kenya , Tanzania , Burundi , DRC, Uganda , Zambia , Mozambique , Sierra Leone , South Africa , Costa Rica , El Salvador , Haiti , Argentina , Sweden , Germany , Spain and Albania were present.
The meeting was in all very successful with a trustful and good spirit and atmosphere. Two resolutions were adopted (attached), the frame work legislation further endorsed and members recommitted themselves for deeper and stronger cooperation in the future. The full report from the assembly will be sent out shortly.
A new board was elected after some intensive dialogue before and at the meeting. The principles developed over the years to have a balanced board – by gender, regions and political affiliation – was fully endorsed also this time. So was the principle to make a clear distinction between parliamentary responsibility and executive and only elect serving MPs. There was also a strong view from the participants to let the Presidency of the forum remain in Latin America for one more period.
The new board:
President – Hon. Sen. Sonia Escudero, Argentina
Vice President – Hon. MP. Manuel de Araujo, Mozambique
Hon. MP. MP Celestino Suárez, Spain
Hon. MP Hans Raidel, Germany
NGO Rep. Ms. Ana Yancy Espinosa, Costa Rica
Hon. MP. Raphael Chegeni, Tanzania
Hon. MP. Christer Winbäck, Sweden
