ELEICOES NO ZIMBABWE

ISS Seminar: Post-Elections Situation in ZimbabweAddis Ababa, 23 April 2008

Wednesday 23rd April 2008, 9:00 am – 13:00 pm, United Nations Conference Centre, UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) – Addis Ababa Office would like to cordially invite you to a public seminar entitled: Post-Elections Situation in Zimbabwe.

Local, parliamentary, senate and presidential elections were held together for the first time in Zimbabwe on 29 March 2008. These elections were preceded by several years of political polarization, claims of severe human rights violations and growing economic hardship including most probably the world’s highest inflation rate of more than 100,000 %. It is simply unavoidable to review the political, human rights, economic and humanitarian background against which the elections took place, their conduct and results as well as international reactions. It is also equally imperative to consider the longer-term political and economic prospects for a country where elections have been fiercely disputed in the past.

The DCP programme strives to complement and support the work of the African Union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. The ISS Public Seminar Series is part of the DCP effort at consensus-building by providing a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates and dialogues on the African peace and security agenda. The aim is to stimulate quality discussion, in-depth and constructive interaction between participants.

You are invited to participate in this important discussion. Please forward this invitation to interested colleagues.
