1. DEMOCRACY, GOVERNANCE AND CORRUPTION



1.1.Renamo accuses Frelimo of disabling its Congress

Renamo has accused Frelimo of making its Fifth Congress unviable, after its postponement from the planned dates of 1st, 2nd and 3rd June, 2009. 1.2. Electoral Union (UE) wants clarification of its link with Renamo
The political parties in coalition with Renamo argue that they are hostages of the Party, given that legally the Renamo- Electoral Union will last until the end of the current Parliamentary mandate. According to the Renamo-UE legal statute, the other integrated parties cannot form other coalitions. According to the leaders of two coalition Parties, Manecas Daniel, of the Party for Democratic Reconstruction (PRD), and José Palaço of the Front for Patriotic Alliance (FAP), the situation of the Renamo-UE is not formally clarified.(http://www.jornalnoticias.co.mz/pls/notimz2/getxml/pt/contentx/766040)


1.3. “Seven million” generate conflicts in Mutarara

According to people, the friendship constitute a valid criterion to have access to the Local Initiative Fund. People in Mutarara, in Tete province, are annoyed with the way the “seven million” Local Initiative Fund is managed in the District. The concern was presented to the President Armando Guebuza during his visit to the District. They believe that members of the local consultative councils, instead of approving projects which would further development, are making decisions in favor of friends and family. 2. ECONOMICS AND DEVELOPMENT

2.1. Energy in Macanga

A system of energy supply from the national network was inaugurated yesterday in the town of Furancungo in the district of Macanga, by the President of the Republic. According to the President, the electricity should be used as a powerful instrument in the fight against poverty, on the basis that it would be used for the installation and operation of factories and the development of social and economic activities of direct impact on the lives of local people.

2.2. Dry-Dock built at Moatize terminal

The country’s first dry-dock has been built at the Sena line cargo terminal in Moatize, Tete province. It will particularly handle goods from and for some landlocked countries without access to the sea, such as Malawi, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. It will begin functioning in September. 2.3. Rapid growth of Moatize expected

Rapid growth is expected in the town of Moatize as result of the exploration of coal which will begin next year. The process of coal exploration will increase employment opportunities, and improve the living standards of the people and the development of the town, according to the President Armando Guebuza, speaking yesterday.

2.4. Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe agree joint management

According to the Ministry of Tourism of Mozambique, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe will jointly manage the natural resources of their trans-frontier areas of conservation. To this effect, an agreement will be signed in the next few months. 3. HUMAN RIGTHS, JUSTICE AND LEGAL AFFAIRS



3.1. Trafficking of humans

According to the Police’s Department for the Protection of Women and Children around 26 people, all of them women and children, were victim of trafficking from Mozambique to South Africa, in 2008. Countries of the SADC region are concerned about human trafficking, and as such are holding a technical meeting in Maputo, with the objective of producing a plan of action. 3.2. Two people detained for human trafficking
The Police announced on Tuesday, the detention of a woman, accused of trafficking 10 children, and of a man, for attempting to entice two young women for work in South Africa. The woman was discovered in Inhambane province with the children.
