Maria Mutola, the legend from Mozambique who began her running career as a student at Springfield High School, posted the day's fastest qualifying time in the first round of the women's 800 at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Mutola, the Olympic gold medalist in 2000, clocked a time of 1 minute 58.91 seconds while winning the fourth heat.
Nicole Teter of Oregon Track Club Elite, of Oregon Track Club Elite, was also in the fourth heat. But she pulled up coming off the first turn, and walked off the track, tears streaming down her face.
Teter had a lower left leg strain before the race even started. She aggravated the injury early in the race.
"I really thought I could just step on the track and get through it," Teter said. "This is the Olympics. I had to go for it. My first stride, I just couldn't get on my toes. I went as far as I could and I just couldn't do it."
The other two 800 U.S. entries, Alice Schmidt and Hazel Clark, also failed to advance.
Mutola talked to a group of reporters in Portuguese, but brushed past U.S. writers, saying: "Tomorrow."
The women's 800 semifinals are Saturday.
Maria Mutola came in second, thus qualifying for the finals!
