LATEST FRO ZIMBABWE/Ultimas do Zimbabwe

Today, 8.7.08 the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro briefed the Security Council in an open meeting on the Zimbabwe . She stated that the “flawed elections produced illegitimate results”, adding that “the seriousness of the situation and its possible consequences has the potential to affect regional peace and security in profound ways.” She went on to say that “It is clear that Zimbabwe will have to go through a political transition bringing together its people around a common project,” and that “It will also need a process of national healing and reconciliation that should include wide-ranging and participatory national consultations.” A UN Press Release on the briefing can be read at http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=27301&Cr=zimbabwe&Cr1= and a webcast of her speech, as well as informal comments to the Media on the situation in Zimbabwe and other matters can be heard at http://www.un.org/webcast/sc.html. The G8 leaders meeting in Tokyo , Japan today 8.7.08 released the attached statement on Zimbabwe . The statement expresses grave concern about the situation and deplores the decision to go ahead with the presidential election despite the absence of appropriate conditions for free and fair elections. They state that they do not accept the legitimacy of any government that doesn’t reflect the will of the Zimbabwean people and lend full support to the AU, SADC and the UN in seeking a resolution.

The Youth Forum issued a Press Release today 8.7.08 condemning what they call ‘Mbeki’s malicious falsehoods’ that Levi Mwanawasa had passed away last week, congratulating Zambia and Botswana for their stance on Zimbabwe and calling for the involvement of civil society in any talks to resolve the situation.

Finally, the UK based MAGGEMM group who seek to promote an open debate about the Gukurahundi massacres that took place in Zimbabwe in the 1980’s, are launching a series of Roadshows around the UK.
