
On 22 March 1961, the Ghana President Kwame Nkrumah called on world leaders to impose “total economic and political sanctions” on South Africa.
Nkrumah stated; “Now that South Africa has decided to continue her apartheid system and has elected to withdraw from the Commonwealth, it is incumbent on all members of the Commonwealth and the duty of all nations in the world to bring pressure to bear on South Africa to abandon apartheid, by imposing total economic and political sanctions on her.”
