1.1. Minister of Work reacts to US Ambassador’s pronunciations

The Minister of Work, Helena Taipo, considers as blackmail the pronunciation of the US Ambassador, Todd Chapman, that his country would withdraw investments in Mozambique, if a group of American doctors are not authorized to work in the area of AIDS in Mozambique.

1.2. Elections calendar announced

The calendar for the October 28th general and provincial elections was approved and published on Monday by the National Electoral Commission (CNE). It states that the electoral campaign will start on September 13th, 45 days before the election date, and terminate 48 hours before voters go to the polls.

1.3. Mozambicans have higher degree of democratic consciousness – says Nuvunga

Researcher and Lecturer at UEM, Adriano Nuvunga, believes that Municipal elections of 19th November, last year, in Beira city, province of Sofala, are a demonstration that Mozambican people know what they want.

The fact that the voters elected Daviz Simango for Mayor but Frelimo and Renamo for the Municipal Parliament is a sign that Mozambicans know how to make choices.

He added that the organizations of social communications contributed significantly to this ability to choose.

1.4. Another group of foreign citizens detained

The Police in Nampula detained, last weekend, another group of foreign citizens living illegaly in the country, in the Mavuco mining region, district of Moma.

The Police also recovered large quantities of semi-precious rocks, which had been illegaly acquired.

The arrests took place as part of the investigation into the burning of the local Police Station, last week.

1.5. Teachers in Massinga threaten to abandon their students

Contracted Teachers in Massinga, Inhambane province, have threatened to abandon their students because they have not received their salaries for 4 months.

2. ECONOMICS AND DEVELOPMENT



2.1. INAM have new meteorological forecasting system

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) will present on Friday, in Maputo, the project of application of information from meteorological radar for short-term weather forecasting. It is an important improvement, particularly for natural disaster prevention, the water resources sector and economic activities.

2.2. Matola holds its First Business Forum

The Municipality of Matola will hold today its First Business Forum, with the objective of creating a favorable business environment, through the debate of development strategies for entrepreneurship and attraction of investment. 2.3. FARE plans to reach 125 thousand new clients

The Support Fund for the Economic Rehabilitation (FARE) aims to reach, by the year 2012, more than 125 thousand clients who are currently outside the bank system, as part of the rural banking program.

2.4. Moatize will have 3 new power stations

Coal mining companies will build 3 power stations in Moatize, Tete province. The project aims to increase the amount of electricity available for economic activities in the country.

2.5. State has borrowed 290 million Meticais

The State has borrowed through the Mozambican stock market (BVM) 290 million Meticais to pay for its budgetary expenses. Next year, the BVM aims to include small and medium sized firms, in order to catalize economic development in the country.

3. HUMAN RIGHTS, JUSTICE AND LEGAL AFFAIRS

3.1. Soldiers call for better conditions

Soldiers have invited Members of Parliament to make surprise visits to see the conditions in which they live. They called for better food and internal living conditions. They also said that soldiers who complain have been threatened, and that leaders of the sector use and abuse power and manipulate so that the truth does not reach the President.

3.2. Administrative Court detects fraud in GERENA project

The audit team of the Administrative Court, in the scope of the inspection of public expenses related to management accounts for the financial year of 2007, have detected theft within the Sofala Provincial Tourism Department, specifically in relation to the Management of Natural Resources project (GERENA). The Provincial Director of Tourism, the Provincial Head of Inspection and the Head of Finance and Administration are involved in the case.
